Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson disclosed he barely escaped a potentially deadly accident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two marshals ran across the track directly in front of him

The alarming incident took place on the third rotation when safety workers were spotted on the racing surface as Lawson was rejoining the race following an early pitstop to change his compromised front wing

Shortly afterward, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his pit wall engineer saying: "Are you kidding me? Did you witness that? I nearly... ended their lives"

"I truly couldn't comprehend what I was witnessing"

"I exited on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and there were just two dudes dashing across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was incredibly risky"

"Clearly there's been a communication breakdown somehow but This is the first time I've faced that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's completely unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a ongoing race track marshals can be allowed to just run across the track in such a way. I don't understand the reason, I'm certain we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

F1's overseeing organization, the global motorsport federation, is currently investigating the situation

"After an occurrence at turn one, track officials was advised that debris was present on the track at the turning point of that curve" declared the regulatory authority

"During the third lap, track officials were notified and made ready to enter the track and recover the debris once the entire field had cleared the area"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had made a pit stop, the instructions to dispatch marshals were rescinded and a double yellow flag was raised in that area"
