Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

England opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple interviews following England's loss in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and third matches.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he revealed his team had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their previous three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the final day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was inevitably tough touring here to face them. They were the favourites and they've proven why."

Pope's Position In Question

Although Crawley's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate place in the side, Pope appears under threat for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and averages just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise externally. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
